As one of the common eye problems, eye strain has probably happened to everyone, except for the blindness. In detail, the eyes are easy to suffer tiredness and stress if they are used for a too long time. The problem is that most of the people need to use their eyes nearly all day long. There are many activities that may lead to eyestrain, such as working on a computer, watching TV, driving and the others. A common place among these activities is that they all require the eyes to focus carefully with lots of efforts. This can easily get the eyes fatigued. In addition, eyestrain for a long time or on a daily basis is quite likely to bring other short term side effects, like headache, neck ache, and possibly long term conditions such as myopia.

To deal with the problem of eyestrain, the best way is to prevent it by avoiding excessive eye use. In fact, it is possible to use the two eyes uncoordinatedly. For instance, it is ok to relax one eye while using the other. To state clearly, one eye can be closed for rest while the other one is still working. The reason for this magic ability is that the eyes use more than one set of muscles, which can be controlled separately. Among all those activities that commonly cause eyestrain, computer use is an outstanding one for the increasing popularity of this contributive invention. The ways to avoid eyestrain or stress while working on the computer are quite important for computer users.

The simplest tip is to make short breaks frequently while using a computer for a day long. And shift focus from up close to at least 20 feet away. This will help relax the tense eye muscles. The working environment is also critical. Once feeling that the screen is causing eyestrain, check the contrast on the monitor. It is always helpful by setting the monitor contrast knob on high. It is still necessary to check the position of the monitor, which should avoid glare created by window light. Nowadays, PC manufacturers are making larger computer monitors or bigger laptops.

There is now a trend that more and more people get eye problems of certain sorts as modern civilization advances. For example, the number of eye problem sufferers increases rapidly with the emergence of computers. Computer, one of the most important achievements in human history, is one of the most important factors leading to various sorts of eye problems. Of which, many computer users have suffered from CVS, abbreviation for computer vision syndrome. It strikes people who use computer for long time, among either adult or children.
CVS is the results of brain’s adaptation to users’ reading habits, which is completely different from reading on paper. However, the adaptation will cause great pressure to eyes and user’s eyes become strained and their visions get declined as a result.
Though many frequent users of computer think they do not get CVS, there are some symptoms that may indicate the existence of this problem. Usually, people who feel some sort of headache, while using computers; who can not focus while reading; who feel irritation in their eyes; who feel some sort tiredness and pain physically; who get blurry vision, etc., all may have this problem. Pay more attention while using computers.
Luckily, this CVS can be prevented or slowed down by people with or without this problem. First, make sure the working environment is nice with ideal lighting, which will lessen the possibility of eye strains and pressure. Second, make sure that the computer monitor will cause less radiation, like LCD monitor. Third, if the monitor is not very nice, computer eye wear should be used. These eye wear can help protect eyes from being damaged by many harmful rays caused by the computer. But they must be prescribed for better safety. Fourth, if people do not wear computer eyeglasses, they should add some special coatings on their glasses, so as to lower the potential risks. Fifth, make sure that the distance between monitor and chairs should be within reasonable and safe range. Ultimately, relax eyes at certain intervals by looking at objects in different places.
Anyway, any frequent computer users should have a good idea about how to prevent SVC if they do not want to get this problem.

The history of eyeglasses

A modern pair of spectacles consists of a frame hosting special lenses. In brief, eyeglasses are worn in front of the eyes nestled atop the nose, correcting one’s vision or protecting the eyes from potential damage. Even if glasses seen in modern times come in a huge variety of types made with advanced technologies, eyewear in its early ages was considerably different. The history of eyeglasses originates from as early as the first century, when magnifiers with a glove of glass filled with water were used to see things more clearly. During the years before 9th century, inventors had been worked hard to design spectacles that can be worn on face. During the 9th century, people had the availability of reading stones that were actually pieces of clear glass polished and shaped into round rocks.

The first pair of wearable eyeglasses was said to appear in the 1200s. However, there are still much mystery and speculation in the history about spectacles invention. One point has remained even after these centuries that convex lenses are used to correct farsightedness and concave lenses are for myopia. There is also saying that the first pair of bifocal glasses was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1784. Modern designs of bifocals are more or less similar to this original style developed by Franklin. As commonly known today, bifocal glasses enable a special group of people to see clearly things in both near and far distances.

Since the invention of spectacles, there have been many technological breakthroughs as people know more about how the eyes work. For instance, those heavy magnifying glasses have been replaced by modern lightweight, comfortable glasses. In addition, eyeglasses with stylish designs are now widely used to express a fashion statement. Vision correction is not the only function now. A large number of individuals now use spectacles to enhance their personalities and lifestyles.

Short for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, LASIK surgery is a popular solution to eye problems especially refractive errors. People with medium and advanced education must have heard of it. LASIK is actually one type of refractive laser surgery that deals with common refractive visual errors, including hyperopia, myopia and astigmatism. As a good alternative to prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses, LASIK has gained much popularity among vision-defected individuals. This is not only because of its advantage over spectacles and contacts, but also its advantages over other forms of laser visual correcting surgeries.

LASIK procedure is not a surgery for any person. Only individuals who suffer from certain eye conditions can benefit from LASIK eye surgery. As aforementioned, only three forms of visual defects are resolvable by LASIK procedure, namely, nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. These are formally called visual refractive errors. These correctable eye conditions have their respective features. Nearsightedness causes it difficult to see objects at a distance while farsightedness plays in an opposite way. Astigmatism is a condition that involves deformities or irregularities on the lenses of the eyes, resulting in distorted images.

People with any of these three visual conditions are potential candidates for LASIK eye surgery. However, it is also necessary for patients to make a prior consultation with an eye doctor or surgeon about individual visual details. There are commonly known pros and cons of LASIK procedure. In addition, this advanced surgery is likely to generate different degrees of outcomes. Some patients can only receive a certain degree of visual improvement, while some others are lucky enough to gain complete visual restoration. It is very necessary to evaluate carefully potential risks and disadvantages associated with LASIK procedure. For some patients, these disadvantages may outweigh those potential benefits. Price is another factor that is widely assessed. LASIK price typically ranges from $1,000 to $2,500.
